What to Do When the Quark Price Is Low

What to Do When the Quark Price Is Low

When a coin increases in value, everyone is happy. Forum posts are optimistic about the coin’s future, and more than half the IRC messages read “TO THE MOOOOON!” However, when a coin comes upon hard times, the community becomes equally as vocal with their pessimism. The IRC, now half-filled, resounds with chants of how the coin is dead, and the forum features nothing but posts blaming the coin developers for destroying their investment.

In case you weren’t sure, yes I am talking about Quark. This is where we are at, and it needs to change. However, I’m not going to lie to you. I’m not going to tell you that Quark is just fine and that everything is going according to plan, because it is not. The Quark community is in the midst of a prolonged dark age, and the Quark price is at an all-time low.

Just take a look at the Quark chart from CoinMarketCap. In case you don’t understand what it means, I’ll give you the tl;dr: it sucks.

Quark Price 180 day market cap

So this is where we are at. What should we do about it? There is no simple answer, but there are 5 steps that each and every Quark community needs to take–from the person who mined the Quark Genesis block to the one who just subscribed to the Quark subreddit yesterday.

1. Avoid Panic-Selling

When the Quark price starts falling, you face no greater temptation then to panic sell your Quark holdings. You should avoid this at all costs, because it is a decision made by emotion rather than logic. Never make an investment decision based upon pure emotion. Even if you do eventually decide to sell your Quarks, you should  do it with a sound mind unhindered by your emotions.

2. Examine Quark’s Technical Features

Now that you have calmed down, you should take an honest look at Quark in relation to the other coins you would consider moving your investment to. Whenever I become distraught about the state of the Quark price, I ask myself the following questions. Which coin offers the best security against network attacks? Which coin has the best distribution model? What features does the coin offer that make it a good long-term investment?

In my honest opinion, the answer is Quark. Quark utilizes an incredibly secure hashing algorithm and offers 30-second transactions. Even more importantly (for me), Quark’s distribution model was built for long-term stability rather than a short-term pump. Critics claim that Quark was instamined and then dumped because nearly every Quarkcoin was mined in a 6-month period. However, I believe that this distribution model is the best way to distribute a currency because it will prevent inflation bubbles over the long-term. Although possessing the best features does not guarantee success, I think that Quark has as good a chance as any coin to rise to prominence once again.

If you don’t reach the same conclusion as me, that’s fine, and I won’t begrudge your decision to sell your Quark holdings. You should never invest in a coin you don’t believe in, so if you don’t like Quark, find a coin that you do.

3. Get Involved

Many in the Quark community have complained that Quark needs to add new features such as anonymity, a multipool, and a widespread marketing campaign. However, community leaders are already working at full capacity to improve Quark. Complaining does not improve anything.

What you should do instead is find ways to get involved. Do you know how to code? Volunteer your time to assist Quark developers in building a mining pool or working on improved wallet features. Can you write? Blog about Quark and volunteer your time to help promote Quark. Are you a dynamic public speaker? Educate yourself about Quark and then find ways to help the Quark community by introducing people to Quark or even gaining interview appearances on cryptocurrency-related podcasts. No matter what your skill-set, you can help the Quark community. If you desire to see Quark grow and thrive, don’t look to the Quark Foundation for the answer. Look in the mirror.

4. Buy More Quark

If you have already lost a ton of money by buying Quark when the price was high, it may sound crazy to increase your Quark investment. However, if you believe that Quark has long-term potential then there are several reasons why it makes sense to increase your investment. For one thing, it creates buy pressure, which helps spur the Quark price to an upward trend.  Additionally, buying more Quark increases your total profits if the Quark price rises.

However, there is another reason that especially pertains to people who bought into Quark when the price was near its peak. Increasing your holdings when the Quark price is low mitigates the risk of your investment as a whole. If you spent $5,000 on Quark at $1 per QRK in December, you might only have $65 worth of Quark today. To break even on your investment, the Quark price would have to increase nearly 100-fold.

However, if you invest another $5,000 in Quark at its current market price, you could acquire over 391,000 QRK. This lowers your average price-per-Quark from $1 to about $.025. Now the Quark price only needs to increase by $.013 to break even on your investment. If the price did increase back t0 $1, you would no longer be just breaking even, you would stand to become quite wealthy.

Of course, cryptocurrency is a very volatile investment, and you should never invest more than you are willing to lose.

5. Remain Patient as the Quark Price Fluctuates

Finally, you should recognize that the Quark price will undoubtedly fluctuate up and down. A Quark price rise will undoubtedly be followed by a price fall–at least temporarily. At best, Quark will see a series of bull and bear runs that hopefully will cause the price to trend upward over the long-term. Avoid making “TO THE MOON” predictions during a bull run or doomsday predictions when a bear market hits.

The Quark community currently faces its greatest challenge: survival. Are we going to give in like so many other coins, or are we going to prove that we are different by weathering the storm and continuing to educate people about the benefits of Quark? No single person can make this decision; it is a choice we as a community will make together.

Nevertheless, I choose to place my faith in Quark, and I hope that you do the same. I won’t promise you the journey will be easy, but I believe it will be worth it when we reach the destination.

CryptoCoinsNews Analysis on Quark Development Meeting

Good afternoon Quark Universe!

For those of you who have not heard, there was an important meeting among Quark leadership regarding the future of Quark’s development. Both the Quark Foundation and Quark developers (including Max Guevara) attended the meeting, and the attendees laid out plans for Quark’s future. CryptoCoinsNews author Clay Michael Gillespie covered the meeting for the popular cryptocurrency news website. From Gillespie’s article:

Quarkcoin developers have announced that big changes are coming to their coin’s infrastructure. In an announcement, James Z., webmaster at qrk.cc and quarkfoundation.cc, stated that he and a team talked with creator Max Guevara and his partner Adam about the future of Quarkcoin in an IRC chat.

Interview With Quark Developer Max Guevara

Interview With Quark Developer Max Guevara

Editor’s Note: This interview was conducted in late 2013. The website it was posted on no longer exists, but interviewer K.C. James and the Quark Foundation graciously allowed us to post it on Quark Universe so that newcomers can learn a bit more about Quark’s developer.

Kc James: What propelled you to make Quark? How did it all start?

Max Guevara: I found crypto currencies fascinating when I discovered Bitcoin about two years ago, having a background in programming and a keen interest in finance and economics. From an economic viewpoint, the idea of a currency not controlled by a central authority, but rather by agreement between its users, is an interesting concept. Having followed the “alt-coin” forums on bitcointalk I was always interested in coins that implemented new ideas.

A coin called SifCoin, released on the Russian forums, caught my attention because it used six different algorithms for hashing instead of one. All coins up to that stage (that I am aware of) used only one hashing algorithm. The obvious advantage of having multiple hashing algorithms on top of each other makes is to make the hash as a whole more secure. If one of the hashes is ever broken, there are five more to break. I modified this approach to interweave an additional three rounds of hashing for a total of nine rounds of hashing. These three rounds use a random hashing algorithm, making it even more difficult to break.

Sifcoin used an approach where block reward increases over time, making for a very inflationary money supply. I instead attempted an approach where the coin supply would stay relatively stable over time. This is achieved in two ways, firstly by producing the coins in a relatively short period of six months, instead of years as is the case with Bitcoin, and secondly to have a constant yearly coin production of around a million coins per year.

The yearly million coin production has two purposes, the main purpose being to keep the network secure by permanently rewarding miners, and secondly to make up for coins lost through lost wallets, making for a relatively constant money supply. One economic definition of inflation is an increase in money supply. By that definition, other coins still have a high inflation rates, as many new coins are still mined, while Quark is almost at the stage where the one million coins will produce around 0.5% inflation for the first year. Ever since its release Quark had good community support from various fantastic members who ran forums, developed a GPU miner and provided other services.

KJ: Particle physics has been a fascination of mine for awhile now. So, naturally, the first thing that really caught my attention with ‘Quark’ was it’s unique name, and proton-like logo. What was your initial reason for using an elementary particle as the name and logo for a crypto-currency?

MG: Yes, the name was inspired by the sub-atomic particles and the logo was inspired by a representation of the quarks in a proton. There is the similarity in that there are six types of quarks and six hashing algorithms used by Quark.

KJ: Quark went from being just another crypto-currency in a long list of other alt-cryptos, to the #4 spot on CoinMarketCap.com, in a staggeringly short amount of time. How surprised were you by Quark’s sudden rise in popularity? (Editor’s Note: As I post this article Quark sits at #16 on CoinMarketCap).

MG: I was extremely surprised when it approached the top 10 coins on CoinMarketCap. Alt-coins and exchanges have received a lot of media coverage recently. This caused an influx of people registering at exchanges like Cryptsy and caused a general rise in the price of most alt-coins. I guess Quark’s secure hashing made it stand out from other coins.

KJ: One of the most persistent and cliched criticisms coming from Quark-naysayers in the crypto-community, is the accusation that ”Quark has been pre-mined.” Could you elaborate on why this statement is false, and if it’s not false, then could you explain how this is a non-issue?

MG: Generally the term “pre-mine” in the alt-coin community refers to mining a coin before releasing it to the public, or where a coin has a special block in the beginning (usually block 1) that gives a large reward to the developer. Neither of these apply to Quark. Quark was released on bitcointalk, the most active alt-coin community on the web, with only the genesis block mined. During this period on the alt-coin forum, many new coins were released, sometimes multiple coins a day.

The response to Quark’s release was also a big surprise. Within minutes the seed nodes were maxed out with hundreds of connections and additional nodes were provided by other members of the forum. The coin was listed on multiple exchanges relatively soon after its release, so I think this allowed for a relatively wide distribution of coins before the recent dramatic rise in price.

KJ: In layman’s terms, could you explain how Quark is better than Litecoin and/or Bitcoin? What makes Quark different and more worthwhile than those two leading crypto-currencies?

MG: I would not like to say one crypto currency is better than another, since these are relatively early days in the cryptocurrency world. Both Bitcoin and Litecoin have huge communties, which I personally believe is a big reason for their success. Quark offers an alternative, arguably more secure hashing algorithm than Bitcoin and Litecoin, quicker transaction processing and a mining model that aims to have a virtually constant coin supply.

KJ: Quark’s transfer time is said to be the fastest and most secure out of all the other crypto-currencies in existence. Could you explain, in layman’s terms if possible, how/why Quark is faster and more secure than other crypto-currencies like Litecoin and Bitcoin?

MG: The main security improvement in Quark over other crypto currencies is its hashing algorithm. It makes it less likely that transactions blocks could be compromised if one of the hashing algorithms is broken. Given recent revelations on how much influence government agencies had over the design of cryptographic standards, it might not be inconceivable, although highly unlikely, that some algorithms may have been compromised.

Quark’s hashing algorithm also makes it very difficult to build custom machines (ASIC) that could out-hash a large network of PCs. The hashing algorithm is not the only factor in the security of a coin. There are other factors like checkpoints, the size of the hashing network and the age of a transaction. Bitcoin is currently the leader in hashing power. With its high hashing difficulty, it does have security advantages over the other coins currently out there.

KJ: Where would you like to see the Quark community take the currency?

MG: To a strong, secure, widely accepted crypto currency with a wide range of products and services offered in Quark.

KJ: In your opinion, how important is the community that is currently being developed around Quark, to Quark’s overall success?

MG: The community is essential. A currency only works if it is widely used and accepted. Governments have the ability to enforce a currency on its citizens, but crypto currencies need the voluntary acceptance of its users.

KJ: What, in your mind, would make Quark a success? Would you like to see Quark overtake Bitcoin one day? Do you think a feat of that sort would be possible for Quark?

MG: Quark will be successful if a strong community develops around the coin, and this has already started to happen. Some very talented and enthusiastic individuals have started doing great work to improve Quark and its infrastructure. I think there is place for multiple crypto currencies to co-exists. Certain currencies offer advantages over other and may be more suited for certain purposes. Quark offers quick transactions, a relatively constant money supply and a secure hashing algorithm.

Bitcoin is still by far the leading crypto currency, in terms of community, recognition, and security. But the crypto-currency world is still in its infancy, and who knows what the future might hold.

Quark Universe Launches Mining Pool

Quark Universe Launches Mining Pool

At Quark Universe, our primary goal is to bring great new features to the community. However, we also want to support the Quark infrastructure itself. Today, we are overjoyed to announce a new addition to the Quark Universe lineup that will simultaneously support both the Quark coin and community–the Quark Universe Mining Pool.

Why Do We Need Another Mining Pool?

Network security is dependent on decentralization. The most decentralized way to mine cryptocurrency is for everyone to solo mine, but the problem with this is that you may go days or even weeks without finding a block. By joining a mining pool, you have a higher chance of getting a payout (even though you will get a lower payout than if you solo mine). However, this centralizes the network’s hashing power.

When more than 50% of the network’s hashing power belongs to a single mining pool, the network becomes vulnerable to the dangerous 51% attack, which would allow an attacker to “double-spend” coins. This recently happened to the popular Litecoin mining pool Coinotron, which at one point accounted for as much as 50.4% of the network’s mining power. By establishing another Quark mining pool, network hashing power will become more decentralized, helping protect us against a 51% attack.

What’s Special About the Quark Universe Pool?

The Quark Universe pool offers all the features of a traditional mining pool, with two awesome additions. The first is that we use a special, secret algorithm that will increase hashing speed and consequently give our miners higher payouts.

The second is an equally great feature. We will use all funds gathered from the 1% fee to purchase lottery tickets from the Grotto Lotto. If one of the tickets is a winner, we will distribute the winnings among all registered miners who have been active for the majority of the previous week. For example, if the Grotto Lotto jackpot is 500 QRK and there are 10 active miners, then each miner will receive a 50 QRK payout in addition to what they have gained by mining.

Are There Fees?

The Quark Universe pool automatically deducts a modest 1% fee from your shares of found blocks. We are not profiting from the fee–it is used to buy lottery tickets from the Grotto Lotto. If you are feeling generous and want to help sponsor future Quark Universe projects, you can opt to donate a larger portion of your shares to us.

How Can I Get Started?

Follow this simple how-to guide. I (Y3llowb1ackbird) am currently out of town, but when I get home I will post a tutorial video for people new to pool mining. If you have any questions in the meantime, just shoot us an email or contact us on the #QuarkUniverse IRC.

We are excited to be able to offer this mining pool to the Quark Universe community, and we hope that you are excited about it as we are. In addition to decentralizing the network, miners in our pool can win huge Quark prizes via the Grotto Lotto. Get started mining at the Quark Universe pool today, and then spread the word about our pool! The more miners who join, the more lottery tickets we will be able to afford–and the higher chance you will have of winning a share of the Quark jackpot!

AltOutlet Now Accepts Quark Payments

AltOutlet Now Accepts Quark Payments

In order for a cryptocurrency to grow and thrive, it is important that businesses trust it enough to accept it as payment for goods or services. Bitcoin, for example, has begun to gain accepted from a variety of major retailers, including Overstock.
Far fewer businesses accept Quark payments, but that number is steadily growing. Recently, Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn elected to accept Quark payments for in-game purchases, and the cryptocurrency payment platform Moolah will soon enable stores to accept Quark payments while still getting paid out in fiat.

AltOutlet

Today, I am happy to inform you that AltOutlet, a popular online store that accecpts payments in cryptocurrency exclusively, has recently added Quark to its list of accepted currencies. AltOutlet sells a wide variety of items, ranging from cryptocurrency apparel to electronics to sporting goods. The company offers free worldwide shipping on all purchases. Though not as established or well-known as a company like Overstock, AltOutlet’s trust in Quark benefits our community because it gives us yet another store where we can spend our Quarkcoins.

AltOutlet

Supporting Charity

AltOutlet isn’t just out to make a profit. AltOutlet gives a small portion of each sale to one of several approved charities. If you would like the money from your purchase to go to a particular charity, you can choose to do so on the checkout page. Across all currencies, AltOutlet has already raised over 13,000 Quark for charities such as Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, and the Smithsonian Foundation.

Bittrex Currency Exchange Adds Quark

Bittrex Currency Exchange Adds Quark

One of the biggest challenges facing the growth of the Quark community is finding a way to make it easier for people to obtain Quark currency. At present, using a Bitcoin exchange is the most common way to obtain Quark. If you are looking to obtain Quark, there are several different exchanges you can utilize. However, it can sometimes be difficult to know whether exchanges are safe. In the wake of the recent CryptoRush debacle, the community recognized the danger of using some of the sketchier-looking exchanges and appealed for an exchange that offers both security and ease-of-use.

Thanks to the lobbying efforts of Quark Universe community members KingsQRK and Kenw2, Quark may just have found that exchange. Bittrexa self-declared “next-generation cryptocurrency exchange,” has agreed to add Quark to their platform, where users can obtain it via a Bitcoin exchange. Bittrex charges a .25% fee for each transaction–a much lower rate than many other exchanges.

Security

security

Bittrex seeks to be the most secure cryptocurrency exchange on the market. The Bittrex development team has been in charge of security operations for such companies as Blackberry, Amazon, and Microsoft, which separates them from some of the other less-reliable exchanges. Bittrex stores 80-90% of their funds in offline wallets where they are invulnerable to online attacks. They also require 2-Factor Identification for all transactions, which means that nobody can transfer your funds out of your wallet unless they gain access to your email or your phone.  Additionally, Bittrex, a United States-based company, vows to strive to maintain strict regulatory compliance in regards to all national laws. As you can see, Bittrex appears to be very concerned with keeping their exchange secure. However, you should still practice proper wallet security practices to protect your hard-earned money.

Conclusion

Bittrex’s decision to add Quark to their trading platform is a huge boon to the Quark community. From all accounts, Bittrex is an excellent exchange that could become a major staple of the Quark economy. The most difficult part of establishing a new trading market is getting volume on the exchange, as can be seen from the surprisingly few number of trades executed on Moolah’s much-lauded Prelude

The first step to building exchange volume is taking the initiative to place a buy or sell order. It can be tempting to wait around for someone else to place the initial orders on the market, but if everyone does that then trades will never happen.  Therefore, Quark Universe, I challenge you to head over to Bittrex and start building exchange volume!

Betting Now Open for NBA Conference Semis

Betting Now Open for NBA Conference Semis

As you may have already read, the Quark Universe Sportsbook just completed its first official round of betting. The UEFA Champion’s League Semi-Finals were a hotly-contested competition, and I am sure that all the entrants had fun watching the scores to see if they would win the pot. If European football is not your cup of tea, you are in luck. We have just opened betting for the NBA Conference Semifinals.

The point system for this competition will work slightly differently than before. For this event, you will predict how many games each team will win in the series. For instance, I might bet that the Los Angeles Clippers will beat the Oklahoma City Thunder by a margin of 4 games to games in a 7-game series. However, I might believe that the Indiana Pacers will rout the Washington Wizards in only 4 games, so I will bet that the Pacers will win 4 games to 0 games.

Whoever correctly guesses the most games will win the entire pot (minus a small fee which will go to maintaining the Sportsbook and supporting other projects), so make sure that you place bets on all the match-ups listed. As a reminder, each entry costs 50 Quark. If you want more information on how to sign up and place bets, read this how-to guide.

Good luck and happy betting!

Quark Universe Sportsbook UEFA Semifinal Results

Quark Universe Sportsbook UEFA Semifinal Results

Attention Quarkers! I am happy to announce that the Quark Universe Sportsbook’s  inaugural event, the UEFA Football Semi-Finals, is completed. Competition at the Sportsbook was tight! There was a three-way tie for first-place, with Cashmen, Revel, and Quarkie splitting the pot. Quarkfx finished a respectable fourth in the contest.

If you missed out on winning Quark because you did not have a chance to bet on the UEFA Semis or your bets just didn’t pan out, do not fret! You can now redeem yourself by betting on the NBA Conference Semi-Finals over at the Sportsbook. As always, choose your bets carefully because it is winner-take-all! Good luck!

Note: If you want to place a bet but aren’t sure how, check out this how-to guide.
